How to silence the solenoids?

Hi there,

trying to play a harp.

Been able to design a support for the solenoids and glued some guitar plucks at the end (will screw them if all is good). It plays but the solenoids are too noisy for the notes extracted from the harp.

Tried some felt at the ends, it works to an extend but it seems that the noise is coming from the core rubbing against the inner brass tube and/or the end guide. I have not been able to reduce this.
Anyone has been able to get this noise lowered?

Regards,
Hervé

Hi Hervé,

I have not tried this but in this post, Johannes gives some suggestions Solenoid Beaters noise

Hi there,

I obtained some quite good results using felt at both ends of the solenoid but what made a big difference was to put some heat shrink on the small shank of the plunger.
I first tried with electrical tape before getting the heat shrink out. It needs to be 3mm and needs to be shrunk otherwise it is too big and does not pass the bottom ‘bearing’.
Once heated this is just the right diameter and does not not prevent the movement.

I have left the inner Oring but really this is hitting the felt first (10mm hole).
I removed the outer Oring and it hitting felt also (3mm hole).
Now, let’s see how long it lasts, I’ll have to put one on test.

With regards to the harp, it much quieter with this mod but the clack sound is still picked up by the resonance body. Not sure how to separate the two parts…

Hi Hervé, that looks like an interesting solution. I have to try that myself. Cheers

I didn’t try but you could try PTFE shrink tube. Teflon should maybe make a good material in this application as normal heat shrink might have too high resistance?
